Questions about work and tax debt

Why do self employed people end up owing?

No one takes tax out of your pay. You owe income tax plus self employment tax of 15.3%, and you are expected to make estimated payments during the year.

Can the IRS take my paycheck?

Yes, after a series of notices and a final notice of intent to levy. You have 30 days from that final notice to ask for a hearing.

Can I get help if I own a business?

Yes. Payroll and sales tax debt can be handled too, but unpaid payroll taxes can become a personal debt for the people in charge.
