The short answer

## What should I do about tax identity theft?

If someone filed a return or got a refund in your name, follow the IRS letter, report it with Form 14039, and get an identity protection PIN. Keep filing and paying your own taxes as usual.

**An IP PIN is a 6 digit number that stops anyone else from filing a return with your Social Security number.**[Source: IRS: Get an identity protection PIN](https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/get-an-identity-protection-pin)

Stop talking to the thief. Don't give money or personal info. Change your Online Account password.

The fastest way to get an IP PIN is through your IRS Online Account. A new one is made each year.

If a CP2000 lists income that isn't yours because someone used your name, send Form 14039 with your reply.
