# How much do I have to owe before the IRS comes after me?

Updated October 8, 20264 sourcesTaxTruce team[Fact checked](/editorial-standards)

The short answer

Any amount. The IRS sends bills for any balance. Larger balances bring more steps: IRS manuals treat $10,000 or more as the usual line to file a lien, and over $66,000 can affect a passport in 2026. At $50,000 or less you can usually apply online for a long plan. Under $100,000 you can apply online for a short plan.

Bills of $100,000 or more for unreported tax are usually due in 10 business days.
