# How does an IRS bank levy work?

Updated October 8, 20262 sourcesTaxTruce team[Fact checked](/editorial-standards)

The short answer

The bank freezes the money in your account when it gets the levy. It holds the money for 21 days, then sends it to the IRS. Those 21 days are your window to call the IRS about a release. A bank levy takes what is in the account that day. It is not ongoing like a wage levy.
